Navigate the cloud transition in professional services.

Leveraging cloud technologies for their scalability, flexibility, and cost efficiency is essential to enhance operational efficiencies and service delivery, but selecting the appropriate cloud model, optimizing resources, and ensuring continuous training are complex challenges.

The Reality of Cloud Adoption Challenges

According to Flexera and Foundry, 96% of IT leaders struggle to implement a cloud strategy. The top three cloud adoption issues are:

  1. Security management of data privacy and a lack of cloud security experts remain among the top concerns for 85% of the organizations polled by Flexera and Foundry.
  2. Skill gaps and resources in cloud management are another challenge. 83% of the companies surveyed are struggling to have cloud management skills and expertise.
  3. Cloud cost is one of the major issues for 81% of the companies surveyed, which includes moving data into and between clouds and controlling cloud cost and moving data.

The points above are of considerable concern, but it is important to examine the scalability of the cloud. Understanding cloud scalability allows firms to easily adjust resources based on client demand and project scope, avoiding costs and limitations associated with traditional IT infrastructure.

The flexibility provided by the cloud supports remote work and global collaboration, which is increasingly important in today’s distributed work environments. Additionally, the cost savings and enhanced security associated with the cloud are highly beneficial.

The Obstacles

IT Consultants and Their Clients Face:

  • Inability to decide on the cloud maturity of clients
  • A hasty decision to jump to the cloud rather than using a systematic approach
  • Unable to precisely define their vision and any strategy for cloud migration
  • Inconsistent understanding of the cloud and how it can transform and benefit the business
  • Deficiency of cloud management skills or expertise within an organization

Additional Challenges for IT Consultants:

  • Differentiating their services among competitors
  • Uncertainty about where to start the cloud journey with clients
  • Lack a repeatable and actionable cloud strategy

Organization-Specific Challenges:

  • Migration from legacy systems to cloud systems is complex and time-consuming
  • Difficulty delineating a value proposition
  • Inability to deliver and achieve desired benefits and mitigate the associated risks

Our Insights

Organizations continue to invest more in cloud services. But the challenges are increasing and are not going away for both enterprises and SMBs, indicating the dire need to address them. Different business units or functional areas are siloed, hence their problems.

These units or areas may solve the problems locally but not for other units and the rest of the organization, demanding a centralized approach and solutions to resolve the challenges of cloud adoption.

Strategic Approaches to Cloud Success

Define Your Cloud Vision

Define your cloud vision before it defines you. Don’t think about the cloud as the next inevitable step for all workloads. The cloud is merely another tool in the toolbox, ready to be used when appropriate and put away when it’s not needed. Cloud-first isn’t always the way to go.

Design Your Cloud Operations

It’s “day two” in the cloud. Now what? Define your target cloud operations state first, then plan how to get there. If you begin by trying to reconstruct on-premises operations in the cloud, you will build an operations model that is the worst of both worlds.

Deliver a Cloud Strategy Engagement

Every client is different, and their approach to cloud adoption is different. However, the problems and end goals of cloud adoption are the same for most businesses. In a unified approach, an effective and repeatable cloud strategy helps to understand and address the requirements/challenges of the client’s business, achieving desired outcomes and delivering a seamless experience of cloud adoption.

Conclusion: Three Keys to Cloud Success

Strategically Select a Cloud Model

Strategically guide the firm in adopting and optimizing cloud technologies. First, select the appropriate cloud model (public, private, or hybrid) and consider factors like data sensitivity, regulatory compliance, and business needs.

Optimize Cloud Resources

After adoption, focus on optimizing cloud resources to avoid underutilization and cost inefficiencies. Implement strong cloud management practices, including regular performance assessments and cost-benefit analyses to ensure optimal resource allocation.
